Bernice Maude Mager Thoma, age 95, of Heath passed way on Friday, December 1, 2017 at the Selma Markowitz Care Center (operated by Hospice of Central Ohio). She was born August 4, 1922 in Hinsdale, Illinois to the late John Francis Mager of Moline, Illinois and Estella Maude (Dow) Mager of Charles City, Iowa.
During her childhood she resided in Hinsdale, Illinois, Downers Grove, Illinois, Charles City, Iowa and La Grange, Illinois. She was a graduate of Lyons Township High School in La Grange. Her father died when she was nine years old.
After graduation she worked for Montgomery Ward Co. and the Illinois Bell Telephone Co. During WWII she worked for the Institute of Scrap Iron and Steel in Washington, D.C.
She was married to the late Albert Casper Thoma of Mansfield, Ohio in 1942. During WWII he joined the U.S. Naval Air and made a 20-year commitment. During that time, they lived up and down the east coast.
After the war they moved back to Ohio and settled in Heath. Bernice worked for the U.S. Air Force at the Newark Air Force Base for 22 years. She retired in 1989. She was a member of Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church, the AFGE Union, The National Association of Retired Federal Employees, The Red Hat Ladies and The Licking County Aging Program.
She is survived by seven children, Charlotte (Tom) Lang of Dallas, TX, Christine Pickrell of Heath, Kathleen (Paul) Mohler of Newark, George (Sherri) Thoma of New Mexico, Roger (Victoria) Thoma of Cleveland, Martha Thoma and John Thoma of Newark; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Puckett and two sisters, Charlotte Hagaman and Lucille Moreland .
Bernice considered her children her greatest love and accomplishment and her flower garden second.
No calling hours or services are being held at her request. Inurnment will take place at Newark Memorial Gardens. The Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.
I am so sorry for your loss of your Mother, Bernice, especially, for Christine, a neighbor, and for Charlotte and Tom, a former classmate. Prayer sent that Bernice may rest in peace, and for comforting for the family at this time of loss.
