A funeral service celebrating the life of Shirley Kay Philipps, age 86, of Newark will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 11, at The Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Pastor Ed Fugate officiating. Burial will follow in Newark Memorial Gardens.
Shirley passed away on Monday, January 8, 2018 at Newark Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born September 30, 1931 in Taney County, Missouri to Norton Lee and Florence Lucile (Yates) Holcomb.
Shirley loved her family deeply and took great joy in spending time with them all. Over the years when she was not raising her children, she worked as a waitress and a telephone operator. She eventually retired from the Prudential Life Insurance office in Newark. She enjoyed square dancing which she began with her first husband, Bobby and continued dancing with her second husband, Sam. Listening to Sam call the square dances was a great joy to her long after she could no longer participate in the dances.
Shirley held on to her sharp sense of humor and her sweet personality throughout her battle with dementia. We now know she is with her Lord and has regained all those memories that she could not recall at the end of her life. She also spent time sewing, gardening and volunteering over the years.
Shirley was also a member of the “Young at Heart” senior performing group where she had great fun singing and dancing with other seniors. She was well loved by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank everyone at Newark Hills Health and Rehabilitation and the staff at the Carol Strawn Center for their wonderful care and kindness over the last five years.
She is survived by her two daughters, Linda (Darrell) Lowry and Janeese Brown both of Newark; two sons, Dennis (Darlene) Blansit of St. Louisville; Ronald (Sonya) Blansit of Athens, AL; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Bobby L. Blansit and second husband, Kenneth “Sam” Philipps; a sister, Francis Underwood; and seven brothers, Larry Holcomb, Bill Holcomb, John Holcomb, Roy Holcomb, Walter Holcomb, Ralph Holcomb and Robert Holcomb.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10, at The Heath Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service, 1249 Hebron Road, Heath.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Carol Strawn Center, 126 West Church Street, Newark, Ohio 43055.
