James R. “Jim” Mills, age 70, of Newark, passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Licking Memorial Hospital after a fifteen year battle with Leukemia. He was born September 2, 1947 in Newark, Ohio to the late Forest G. and Phyllis E. (Warthen) Mills.
Jim was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served in the Army. Jim worked with the Licking County Aging Program for many years where he had been a medical driver. He was an avid nature enthusiast. He loved animals, especially his dog, Buford Pusser Mills, his best pal. He had a passion for the outdoors, hiking, and camping. He passed his love of the outdoors onto his children. In his later days, Jim could be most often found enjoying nature from his porch swing. If asked how he was, Jim’s response was always, “I’m good in places.”
Jim had a kind, pure soul and was loved by all who knew him for his laid back and very patient nature. Jim was always giving to others and ready to help in any way. His message to everyone is, “We’re here to keep each other grin’n.”
He is survived by two daughters, Heather (Mariusz) Nowak and Melissa (Shai) Harris both of Atlanta, Georgia; a brother, Ron (Terry) Mills of Heath; two sons, Jim (Amber) Saylers of Zanesville and Steve (Danielle Noteman) Saylers of Heath; and his ten grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his wife, Marsha E. (Veatch) Mills (1997).
A graveside memorial service with military full honors will be held at a later date in May at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Licking County Humane Society, 825 Thornwood Drive SW, Heath, Ohio 43056.
The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service, 59 North Fifth Street is assisting the Mills family with arrangements.
