Wayne A. Dowie, age 98, of Newark, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2018. He was born December 11, 1919 in Newark, Ohio to the late A.W. and L. Virgene (Hoodlett) Dowie.
Wayne’s first job was working at a movie theater at the Downtown Newark Arcade. Wayne served our country during World War II in the United States Army as a combat infantryman. He married his beloved wife, Lena Mae Louise and they raised three children. Wayne loved to work and provide for his family. A majority of his life he was a service station manager and owner of Dowie’s Marathon on 21st Street, Newark.
After his retirement he continued to work various places such as a bartender at the Millwheel Tavern and Huber Nissan researching car titles. Wayne liked to cook and mushroom hunt. He was an outdoorsman. He worked up until he was 87 years old. Wayne had a good life.
Wayne is survived by his son, Terry (Carolyn “Kack”) Dowie; two daughters Virgene (Donald) Olson and Linda (Bob) Jackson; 5 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 9 step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lena White; and two sisters, Ruth Morris and Jean Purdy.
