A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph Louis Fischer, 84, of Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 232 W 9th St., Connersville, IN with Fr. Dustin Boehm, as celebrant. Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery, 801 North Gregg Road, Connersville, with military honors.
Joseph passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Arlington Care Center in Newark, Ohio. He was born January 21, 1934 in Connersville, Indiana, the only child to Cornelius J. and Viola C. (Barnhorst) Fischer.
Joseph grew up in Connersville, Indiana graduating from Connersville High School with the class of 1952. After high school, he attended Indianapolis Electronics School and worked for the WCNB Radio Station in Dayton, Ohio as a radio engineer.
He joined the United States Army in 1954 and served during the Korean War in Tokyo and Nagoya Japan. Joseph was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in 1956.
He worked at Gentile Air Force Station in Dayton, Ohio before transferring in 1962 to the Newark Air Force Base in Heath, Ohio where he retired as a production scheduler in 1989 after 35 years of service.
He enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, watching TV and reminiscing about his family history. Joseph is survived by his son, David (Monica) Fischer of Princeton Junction, New Jersey; two daughters, Cheryl Fischer of Blacklick, Ohio and Patricia Fischer of Newark, Ohio; grandchildren, Kayla and Lauren Hill, Isabella, Clara and Daniella Fischer; Bruno and Lucas Bitencourt; and numerous other relatives.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and his spouse of forty-nine and a half years Janet (Corwin) Fischer whom he married May 27, 1967.
The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements. No calling hours will be observed.
