A funeral service for Donald Eugene Smith, age 78, of Newark, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 18 at The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Reverend Michael Ensey and Bishop Kirk officiating. Burial will follow at Wilson Cemetery.
Mr. Smith passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 at his home. He was born September 21, 1940 in New Straitsville, Ohio to the late Gilbert W. and Ada Kay (Taylor) Smith.
Mr. Smith was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was passionate about Elvis, OSU Football and The Cleveland Browns. Mr. Smith loved technology. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #499, Heath Fraternal Order of the Eagles #3723 and Newark Fraternal Order of the Eagles #387.
Most of all, Mr. Smith enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and Skyping with his great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a great father and an exceptional grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by a son, Carl S. Smith; three daughters, Laura Lee Kelley, Mitzie Louise Smith, Mary Cynthia Woody; step-son, John (Jackie) Gonser; a brother, Robert L. Smith; the mother of his children, Amy R. (Hottinger) Smith; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren .
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his life companion of many years, Eleanor V. Smith; grandson, Nathan C. Reiss; a granddaughter, Jamie K. Haynes; two brothers; two sisters and his best friend Raymond Taylor.
Family and friends may call from two hours prior to service (9-11 a.m.) at The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark.
Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Smith’s name to Christian Life Center Church, 665 Linnville Road, Heath, OH 43056
