A graveside service for U.S. Army Master Sergeant, Bernard O. “Bernie” Stough, age 91, of Newark, will be held on Wednesday, July 17 at 2 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Licking County Veterans Alliance conducting military services.
Bernie passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at Licking Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 25, 1927 in Newark, Ohio to the late Freeman O. and Mary E. (Martin) Stough.
Bernie was a very kind and caring man who was always there to help others in their time of need. He was a 1944 graduate of Newark High School. After graduation, Bernie attended Denison University and The Ohio University where he was a member of the Lamda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He proudly represented his country by serving in the United States Army during World War II and later served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Bernie retired in 1970 from the United States Air Force Band.
He had been a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge #391 from 1937–1944 as well as a member of the Licking County 4-H Band and from 1942–1950. He was also active with the Licking County Symphonics, the American Federation of Musicians, the Knights of Pythias, and BPOE (Elks) band.
Bernie is survived by daughter-in-law, Wanda Stough; granddaughter, Lauren Stough; and very special friends, Susie Swartz, Ann Thomas and Beverly and Larry Hansel.
In addition to his parents, Bernie was preceded in death by a son, Erich Stough of Rapid City, South Dakota (September 29, 2016); and two sisters, Martha and Dorothea.
