A funeral service celebrating the life of George L. “Pappy” Deckard, age 65, of Newark, will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, at The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Chaplain Cory Campbell officiating.
George passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Licking Memorial Hospital. He was born December 16, 1954 in Newark, Ohio to the late Roy V. and Norma Jean (Loper) Deckard.
George enjoyed working on and repairing old cars and Allis-Chalmers tractors. He also collected vintage Coca-Cola memorabilia. He worked with Owens-Corning for twenty-eight years before retiring in 2005.
He was a 1975 graduate of Riverview High School in Warsaw, Ohio. George deeply loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a hardworking, private, family man with a wonderful sense of humor who always thought of others before himself. He always enjoyed camping at “the river” in Dresden, Ohio.
He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Mona R. (Kimble) Deckard, whom he married on October 12th 1974; a son, Shawn (Brynn) Deckard; a daughter, Kathy (Greg) Corbin; siblings, Phyllis (Dave) Benner, Regina McKnight, Roy “Wick” (Connie) Deckard, Sherry Neighbor, and Tim Deckard; nine grandchildren, Rya “Jay” (Doug) Shepherd, Kayla Corbin, Bethany “Runt” Corbin, Vanessa Corbin, Gianna “GiGi” Deckard, Garrett Corbin, Brady Crawmer, Keegan Deckard and Gracie Deckard; two great grandchildren, EvaLynn Shepherd and Michael Shepherd; best friend, Pete Jacks; and many nieces, nephews: and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dan Deckard; and a sister, Rebecca Deckard.
Family and friends may call from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, at The Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta-Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service, 59 North Fifth Street, Newark.
Memorial contributions may be made in George’s name to ALSAC / St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 1404 Goodale Boulevard, Suite #200, Columbus, Ohio 43212.
